Magellan RoadMate 300 GPS Portable NavigatorUser Review: - GPS 300 - GOOD VALUEIt took me 4 phone calls and 3.5 week waiting time until Magellan finally sent me a window mount that was compatible to the backplate of my GPS system. However, after this initial glitch, I made positive experiences with the GPS 300. It takes only about a minute until the GPS 300 finds my locations. Graphical and voice instructions are clear and easy to follow. Maps are not very accurate, sometimes misleading. Also destinations are not always chosen through the most direct routes. Suggestions for further improvements: allow download of maps for Europe and add a rechargable battery - wouldn't take much! User Review:  - Great unitGreat unit! gets me where I want to go, no more maps! I dont need a unit with the whole U.S. on it, just the southeast. I was given an sd card of the southeast for free when this unit was purchased(cost 50.00).Its all I need, simple to operate. With the voice commands you really dont even have to look at the screen, just listen. Very accurate with the optional exterior mounted magnetic antena(sp?). User Review:  - Avoid this product!!!I have a Magellan 700 and my wife the 300. While the company claims that these are quite the same product with lesser memory - there are significant differences that makes this product far much inferior. 1. The processing is extremely slow - sometimes it takes a few minutes before giving you the directions and till then you pretty much keep drifting into the wrong streets and so it has to start recalculating! 2. The software uses "TOWNSHIPS" and NOT cities. If you are in the NE like me and have a mailing address (which has a city) tough luck! You will enter the street name and will have no clue as to what township to enter. This is perhaps the single big feature that almost makes the product unusable. 3. Often it takes much longer for the device to get the GPS signal when coming out of a garage or other covered parking. 4. When I was driving around in Manhattan - it had no idea where I was and was indicating that I was driving in the middle of blocks and not streets. Again, the 700 and 300 look very similar, but do not be deceived. The 700 is a great product, but the 300 is seriously lacking! User Review:  - direction & voice commands is very poorSo many voice commands differes from original direction shown in unit. recently started to freeze after year usage. So many time calculate wrong directions even. Takes you to no where, than calcuate direction again from there no where place. But support from India, is very good. The can listen problem & try to solve it best the can. Somebody saying support is not good, try to call verizon or motorola support. Than compare. User Review: - I Love ItI had none of the set-up problems described by others. It boots quickly, no problems loading maps, and I got a free SD card with the enitre Northeast from Magellan through a rebate and had no problem installing that. I find the GPS to be amazingly accurate. The route that it suggests might not always be what you would take if you had perfect local knowledge, but it's much better than directions you get out of Mapquest, etc. More imporantly, you just can't get lost. Miss a turn, it quickly reroutes you. I have only found a couple of minuses with the 300 (which are really true of all models; it's just the current state of this technology): - As others have stated, the maps are dated. Not too big a deal for me, but the unit will give you bum instructions when you drive through a circle that has since turned into an intersection, etc. - I hate the mount. The window suction cup sticks pretty good, but it has fallen off once or twice. And when you want to take it off, it's a little difficult to do so. I wish there were better mounts. - When driving through a large city with sky scrapers, you sometimes don't see enough sky to get a good signal. I like the way the Magellan shoots over to giving you a visible list of your turns, but I also hate losing the voice prompts just when I need them most. - The biggest problem is getting the 300 to recognize an address. The system of entering an address is pretty good, but it doesn't always recognize the address you would expect it to. Sometimes, it doesn't have the town name that you're looking for because it has the address identified by the location's township or some other identifier. I can't believe it's not based on mailing addresses 100% of the time. This has been the biggest problem for me. That's what I don't like, but again, many of those items apply to ALL units, not just the 300. On balance, I love this unit. Once you get it to recognize the address (which you can do most of the time, but not always), it is flawless in taking you there. Highly recommended. |
