Lowrance 112-362 iWay 500C Portable GPS Navigator and MP3 Player

User Review: 5 out of 5 stars - Great Service
I have had my unit for about 18 months and don't know what I would do without it. The 10 Gig of MP3 space sure helps on long drives. I have had problems with the iWay500c three times that required warranty service (mine is useded every weekday and has 100's of hours on it). Service was fast and trackable. I'd recommend the extended warranty if it gets used a lot.

User Review: 5 out of 5 stars - Lowrance iWay 500C
Love the 5" screen and that everything came pre-programed, all I had to do was just plug it in. Very easy to program but sometimes takes a while to load. Also like the 3 screen option but keep it in 3D most of the time. Didn't use the windshield attaching arm as the unit is heavier than others. Instead, used a strip of velcro to position unit on front dash. Works great and is very steady. The 5" screen makes all the differenct in the world as it is easy to read day or night. Also, great price. Got a 5" for what the others charge for a 3 1/2". I'm glad I waited for Lowrance to make their debut.

User Review: 5 out of 5 stars - Lowrance iWay 500C
The 500C has performed as well, if not better, than what I had expected. The accruacy of the mapping information provides me with a sense of added security. The only problem is the slowness in receiving the rebate from the manufacturer, even though I had received an Email stating it was approved and would be sent - that was over a month ago.

User Review: 1 out of 5 stars - Much better nav devices are available...
I was asked to evaluate the Lowrance iWay 500c by a friend who just lost her husband to cancer. I had it for about 2 weeks and used it for both short and one relatively long trip. Here are the pros and cons:

Pros:
·Large and bright TFT screen - 5" diagonal; unusually large for GPS auto navigation devices in its price range; does not wash out in bright sun; dimmable for night use.
·Good voice volume; audible even in heavy traffic/noise; volume is adjustable with button on right side of screen.

Cons:
·Very heavy (~2.5 lbs); cumbersome to hide and reattach every time you park
·Unintuitive/hard to use
·Slow to acquire initial position (~1.5 min.)
·Slow go generate routes (5 min.)
·Insufficient memory to generate a cross-country route; must pick intermediate destinations and gen routes to each separately
·No battery, so has to reacquire position and regenerate last route each time turned on (which can tak 6-7 min.)
·Manual is out of date and out of sync with latest operating system; updated manual not available from Web site
·NAVTEQ maps are inaccurate (some roads shown as they were 10 years ago)
·Frequently does not generate the most direct route regardless of preference settings
·Fails to recognize that an alternate and more direct route you're taking will get you to the same place as the route it originally calculated and tries multiple times to get you back the the calculated route even if that means taking you off the fast and direct interstate road you're on and onto local streets in a large city loaded with traffic and traffic lights
·Turn instructions often announce streets by route # rather than name (e.g., "SR 261" instead of "Foulk Road")
·Turn instructions are often too early or too late, cause you to turn onto a street you should not have or to have just past one that you should have turned on
·Tech support is slow to respond and not very helpful

In short, I would not recommend the iWay 500c to anyone and especially not to anyone who is "computer challenged".

User Review: 5 out of 5 stars - Invaluable
I was doing some volunteer work in Biloxi, MS when a group of 6 of us was given the task of poll watching (through Election Protection) on Nov.7, 2006. Had I not had my iWay, we never would have found most of the polling spots. Two were way out in Timbuktu and at 6pm it was too dark to see where we were going even if we had been familiar with the area. Again, all I did was plug in the street numbers, names, city and state, logged them to my address book and was able to access them in the order we needed! The others on my team were very impressed with it and were looking into purchasing one when they returned home. By the way, East Biloxi (hardest hit in MS) is looking better but still needs a lot of help rebuilding. If you have it in your heart, give "Hands On Gulf Coast" a try. Very great organization with many dedicated long-term young people working with volunteers (like myself and mother) to make the town the community's "hometown" again. [...]

The only complaint I have is that I feel the update downloaded in August has made "generating routes" slower. I do like the QWERTY keyboard update, though!
I have had my unit for almost a year now and am very satisfied. It does help you get back on track if you take a wrong turn.
