Magellan RoadMate 760 Portable GPS Navigator

User Review: 2 out of 5 stars - Unit is good, support really bites
Had the unit now for 2 years, Dec '05. The unit works well. Only complaint is no updates on the maps until Dec '07. But I keyed in an extra digit during product registration, and that is what the unit uses to "unlock" the device to update the map. So far 3 phone calls in a week to the "help" line, and nothing as to helping me out. I may have paid the upgrade fee for nothing ! Advice- if you do not need support, buy Magellan. If you may need some help - keep looking. I know my next unit will not be Magellan.

User Review: 1 out of 5 stars - Terrible customer service and no map update
Maps are out of date and still waiting for the promised update. Customer service outsourced to India is a joke and corporate headquarters doesn't answer emails. Don't buy a Magellan GPS

User Review: 1 out of 5 stars - Roadmate good. Magellan Customer Service bad.
Last year I bought a Magellan Roadmate 760 for myself and for my Dad. Both had to be replaced - mine before I had it a month, my Dad's after about 6 months. Amazon replaced mine with no hassles. Magellan replaced my Dad's, again with no hassles. Both replacements have worked well. HOWEVER, when it came time to upgrade the maps, the nightmare started. First, I tried to place an order with Magellan only to find out that the web site was down for repairs and that customer sales do not actually take sales orders. After a week I was finally able to place the first order, only to have the $20 off coupon rejected. I called customer service and was told that the only way for them to fix the problem was for them to cancel the order and I would have to try again. So, even though I thought that this was a very stupid way to do business, I placed a second order for my GPS upgrade and also placed an order for my Dad's upgrade. A week or so later one disk arrived and the amount for the disk sans $20 off was posted to my credit card. No one had ever canceled the first order. I called, and called, and talked to one unhelpful person after another from 10 AM until 6 PM. Finally I was told that they could send me another disk which I could return (paying the postage) and then they could take the charge off my credit card. That didn't even make any sense, so even though the issue was still unresolved, I moved on to problem #2, where was my Dad's software. Apparently, it and my second order (the one that was not suppose to be canceled) were on hold, for no discernible reason. And, just to add insult to injury, when I followed the instructions to upgrade my maps, the software I had been sent erased my GPS unit and then stopped with a "copy failed" error message. Technical support, instead of sending out a new working disk, decided I could pay to send my GPS in to them and they would upgrade the software. Since I was currently looking at an expensive and rather useless paperweight, I had to agree. I also had them cancel all software orders. And believe me that took some explaining in very small words to make the current customer service person I was talking to understand the concept. I will probably still get the disks and my account will probably still be charged and I don't think I can go through this again. And, since I haven't gotten my GPS back from Magellan yet, I don't even know if I have a working GPS yet or if I have spent a lot of money and ended up renting the unit for a year when they don't send it back and don't understand the concept or remember that they even had the GPS. These were uniformly the most useless customer service people it has ever been my misfortune to have to talk to. Next GPS unit will be a Garmin!

User Review: 2 out of 5 stars - Don't buy
I bought this unit a little less than two years ago. At first, it worked fairly well but took quite a while to pick up a signal and find its location. After a while this problem worsened and now the unit doesn't work at all! Also, perhaps all GPS systems are like this, but it sometimes "gets confused" in urban areas and does not always give directions that someone who is familiar with the area would take. For example, I was driving locally and was pretty sure of the fastest route but wanted to double check. The GPS system gave me a route that would have taken me twice as long had I followed it. It turned a relatively simple, straight ride into a nightmare with lots of turns and a highway thrown in for good measure! I won't be buying a Megellan GPS again.

User Review: 1 out of 5 stars - NO CUSTOMER SUPPORT
If you think you will be getting your "Free" update and/or any customer support from this company; forget it. They are only concerned with selling the merchandise and developing newer models and that is it.

They advertise that the purchaser is entitled to one free Software update, but they never release any updates. I have been monitoring their site for "2" years for my update and the date keeps moving and/or "No software updates available".

They make it extremely difficult to reach them and then they will not return calls or acknowledge e-mail. Consider purchasing another brand.
NUVI at least tells you what lane to be in - not this product.
