Magellan RoadMate 800 Portable GPS NavigatorUser Review: - Bad Manufacturing QualityI bought this for 599.00 and it works fine but manufacturing quality is really bad. Insertion pin for AC/DC adapter completely fell apart into pieces. This happened after a month of usage. It can not be even fixed. User Review: - An adequate GPS for about 12-15 monthsThe good: This GPS will get you where you're going (eventually); an extensive points of interest database; maps of north america preloaded. The bad: Directions take you throught slow center of towns rather than finding bypasses, etc.; battery doesn't stay charged for more than about a half hour; pre-loaded maps of Europe cost over $250 to unlock; maps and points of interest are well out of date. The ugly: After slightly more than a year of use my system frequently freezes and now will not keep a charge; even when plugged in the system flashes low battery and shuts itself off (even though the battery light indicates "green" for full charge); NO MAP UPDATES - the website occasionally talked about releasing them (for a price) but to my knowledge never has; poor customer service for the price. Conclusion: It was handy and better than nothing while it worked, but save your money and buy something from a company that's more reliable and will let you update your investment for free. User Review: - Functional, but not great. This works fine, and is OK to use, but I have had some other GPS map finders in rental cars that are spectacular by comparison. I got this because AAA sells them, but in all I am disappointed. User Review: - Magellan support is useless.Magellan RoadMate 800 Portable GPS Navigator The unit works well and is usually accurate and reroutes you quickly enough. Magellan map updates are way behind and impossible to use. I purchased the latest update from them when it became available in the 4th quarter 2007 and the update is dated 3rd quarter 2006 - plus now that installation has failed multiple times- the unit is useless since it's hard drive was altered during the process. Magellan tech support is totally useless. I would choose a unit easier to update because you are completely on your own when you encounter problems. I will not buy a magellan again. User Review: - Enjoy your moneyThis 800 has been quirky since I bought it. Things like voice would quit and come back in a few days. Last night it dropped dead in the middle of a trip through the Twin Cities (MN). Not even so much as a skipped heart beat before it died. Didn't help to reset or uplug. It finally displayed "contact customer service". That really cheered me up. Fortunately I had a good navigational device with me (my wife) or I'd still be wandering around. I'm "lost" without a GPS. I've had a 760 for a couple of years and it has a few quirks too. Most of them however it has grown out of such as freezing up. You will get more engoyment out of donating your money to your favorite charity, putting it down the trash disposal or burning it than spending it on an 800. Magellan should stayed with making navigational devices and not trying to incorporate entertainment devices into their products. The only thing I like better about this one over the 760 was the 3D map. They even did away with the second voice for street naming. You can only have one user. With the 760 you can have 3 different ones. I never tried it with the 800 but the 760 is great for yard saling with the trip feature. I just plugged into 110V, got all the addresses from the newspaper, put them in, optimized it and it went one direction when I left, made a complete circle and came back home from the oposite direction. I see several 760 on Amazon so I think I'll buy one. By the way the 800 was used very little. It is now 1 week later. The 800 has been unplugged and turned off for the past week. Plugged it into 110v this morning and lo and behold it works perfectly. I wonder how long it will last. No shortage of suspense. |
